Race Preview

Event/Date: Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola – July 5, 2008

Location: Daytona International Speedway – Daytona Beach, Fla.

This Week's AT&T Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway … Jeff Burton will race chassis No. 226 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Cup Series stable. Built new in 2008, this is the same Chevrolet Impala SS Burton raced to a 13th-place finish in the 50th running of the Daytona 500 in February and to a 12th-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway.

Former Winner, Stat Facts … Burton is the 2006 Daytona 500 pole winner and a former winner at the famed Daytona International Speedway. He claimed victory under the lights in the 2000 Pepsi 400. In 29 starts at DIS, Burton has posted one win, six top-five and eight top-10 finishes.

Back to Orange … After showcasing a LENOX Industrial Tools paint scheme last weekend at New Hampshire, Burton's No. 31 Chevy will return to its traditional orange and blue AT&T paint scheme this weekend at Daytona.

Season Rewind … Over the season's first 17 races, the South Boston, Va., native has claimed one win, four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes and has yet to finish worse than 15th. The 20-time Cup Series winner sits second in the NASCAR Cup Series championship point standings, 64 markers behind leader Kyle Busch. Additionally, the 2008 Food City 500 winner continues to lead all active drivers with the most laps completed this season. With the exception of finishing one lap down at Dover, while still finishing eighth, Burton has completed all laps of competition this season.

RCR Rocks Daytona … Dating back to 1986, RCR owns 23 total victories at DIS, including Dale Earnhardt's emotional win in 1998, kicking off NASCAR's 50th anniversary, and Kevin Harvick's dramatic win in the 2007 season-opening Daytona 500. Additionally, RCR won 10 straight (1990-1999) qualifying races with Dale Earnhardt. All told, RCR has won five Bud Shootouts, 13 qualifying races, two Coke Zero 400s and two Daytona 500s. Dale Earnhardt Jr. also won the February 2002 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona driving a car fielded by RCR and Harvick won the 2007 Nationwide Series opener at DIS in the No. 21 Chevrolet. In 104 points-paying Sprint Cup Series races at the historic 2.5-mile Daytona Beach race course, RCR has four wins, 10 poles, 25 top-five and 45 top-10 finishes. RCR-prepared race cars have also led 1,440 laps and earned just over $16 million in purse money. Richard Childress, a former driver in NASCAR's premier division earned two of those top 10s between February 1976 and July 1980.

Jeff Burton QA

You were quite the contender in the season-opening Daytona 500. Talk about your impressive run.
“Restrictor plate racing has not been our strong point. We struggle at qualifying and have raced pretty well but we haven't had the speed in order to be successful. We got ourselves in position to lead the Daytona 500 and were one restart from winning the race but it just didn't work out. We weren't fast enough to be leading the race at that time but that's where I got us and eventually got shuffled out late in the race. I was trying to change up my restarts because I knew if I took off on a normal restart that I was going to get blasted by and, ultimately, it made it worse. We ended up finishing 13th which is disappointing based on where we were with three laps to go. Nonetheless, we learned something from it and hopefully we can apply it to this race.”

At Talladega earlier this season we saw drivers bump draft each other and push them up through the pack. Are we going to see the same thing at Daytona?
“You won't see as much of it at Daytona because it will be harder for the cars to run together. Handling is not an issue at Talladega but it is a huge issue at Daytona. It's going to be harder to push people because you're not going to be as close to them. It's a different kind of race. Daytona is not as much of a down force track like Charlotte but it's much closer than Talladega so the type of race you get is completely different.”

You captured your first win at Daytona in 2000. How special was that?
“Daytona is so entrenched in NASCAR's history. There's no question the (Daytona) 500 is the bigger of the two races but I won't give my 400 trophy back.”

Staying in the top 12 in points is important to make the Chase but how important, psychologically, is it to win?
“I don't think its psychology as much as it is facts. If you're a team that hasn't found a way to win, you're a team that hasn't done the things that you want to do then you are not having the success that you need to have. That has an effect on you. We race to win. We race to finish the best we can. When we can't win and when you don't feel like you're doing that and the pressure starts, what are we going to do? How are we going to get better? What do we have to do? The workload gets higher and it just snowballs. Then when you work harder and you don't have success because you worked harder. The pressure just builds and builds and builds. When things go well, you are able to always see that you're making the next step. You're always being able to improve. When you aren't seeing that then you start questioning … what are we doing wrong or how do we do it better … and that builds tension within the team as well.”
